StreetCube Wandsworth, the sustainable food project opened by MasterChef Raymond Blanc in Southside Piazza, is currently playing host to a chef from Italy who claims to haves developed the world’s most sustainable pizza.

Alessandro Cambarau believes that every style of food can be more sustainable and better for people and planet, just with a few simple tweaks.

“I come from a cuisine family” said Alessandro, “my mother is a very big influence on my cooking and she has helped me to develop a sustainable approach to food. She still helps out still at our installation at StreetCube, and she makes the most amazing Curlurgiones, which are unique Sardinian organic pasta dumplings”.

“I’m very honoured to be part of StreetCube and I have been perfecting the sustainable pizza for a while now, and is something I’m very proud of. It means that we can be profitable whilst also saving the planet and feeding everybody with healthy food which doesn’t have to cost the Earth”.

He aims to reduce its environmental impact by going zero plastic, reducing food waste and purchasing organic ingredients from local farmers and opting for plant proteins over animal products.

“Traditionally, food has been a massive problem when it comes to climate change” says founder of StreetCube, Pascal Gerrard, “currently, the industrial food system is responsible for more than 35% of all greenhouse gas emissions”,

“For decades, we have been relying on an industrial factory farming system, importing out-of-season produce from half-way around the globe, destroying the soil with pesticides and chemicals, growing food artificially and pumping hormones into cattle fed on GM soy which exacerbates ruminance all of this is contributing massively to the destruction of our planet, and our health, It’s time for change!”.

StreetCube provides a solar-powered sustainable street kitchen from which chefs can perform and perfect their own recipes, based on a more sustainable food system.

Pascal says “If we can develop a more organic, local, seasonal food system without plastic and without food waste, and relying on a strong focus on nutrition, then we can fix a lot of problems. In fact we can improve public and planetary health by up to 80% with every meal we serve. We are proud to welcome and support every chef who wants to cook more sustainably, and Alessandro is one of those chefs who really understands the importance and severity of the problem”.

StreetCube is open 7 days from 0am to 7pm during lockdown, and available for take-away only. Social distancing measures and site stewards are on-hand to assist visitors.
