Wandsworth Fights Back Against Recession

Council leader promises to redouble efforts during 2009

He said all areas of public service had a duty to provide the best value for money for taxpayers:

"Wandsworth 's council tax is the lowest in the country. We are committed to keeping our bills affordable for local people. When household budgets are stretched, a low tax can make a real difference.

"In the new year we will be launching our 'best buy' campaign. This will build on the low tax platform and stress all the advantages of living, working and investing in Wandsworth.

"It's about demonstrating the borough's unique strengths and ensuring all our key services are geared to the huge economic challenges we all face in 2009".

The campaign will focus on:

  • Stimulating inward investment
  • Promoting skills training and apprenticeships
  • Extending financial support in town centres for small traders
  • Backing regeneration in key areas including Nine Elms and Wandsworth town centre
  • Lobbying for transport infrastructure investment including local station improvements and the East London Line extension to Clapham Junction.

The council will also be arranging a series of 'beat the credit crunch' seminars for businesses – starting in Putney on January 28. Contact sdwallace@wandsworth.gov.uk for details.

All town hall departments will be expected to maintain the highest standards for paying bills on time. The council has the best record in London for prompt payment of bills to suppliers.
