Free Guides To Safer Travel At Night

Council & TfL have produced pocket guides for residents

With the Christmas and New Year party season rapidly approaching, the council has produced a series of new pocket guides to help you get home safely after a great night out.

The council's technical services department has published free Safer Travel at Night guides for Clapham Junction, Putney and Tooting town centres, with a funding contribution from Transport for London.

Each guide, which folds up into a convenient credit card size that can be easily kept in wallets or purses contains:

  • Night bus information for the relevant town centre – showing the location of each bus stop and destinations of all routes.

  • Helpful tips and advice on how to stay safe on your night out and how to avoid problems while using public transport or walking home.

  • Locations of public telephones, taxi ranks and licensed minicab offices.

  • Tips on how to avoid falling prey to unscrupulous minicab drivers and advice on how to steer clear of unlicensed cabs.

  • Details on how to contact Cabwise – a capital-wide scheme supported by the Mayor of London, the Metropolitan Police and Transport for London which allows mobile phone users to receive text messages showing telephone numbers of two reputable licensed minicab firms operating in the area.

The council's executive member for community safety Cllr James Cousins said: "If you are planning a night out in Tooting, Putney or Clapham Junction then these free guides are really worth having, especially if you are a little unfamiliar with these town centres.

"As well as containing very important tips on staying safe, they contain a wealth of very practical information on buses, cabs and trains.

"There is nothing worse than being stranded somewhere after an enjoyable night out, unsure of how you are going to get home. These guides can help you find a safe and quick method of transport back to your front door."

The pocket guides are available from local libraries and from bars, pubs and other licensed premises in Wandsworth. To order copies visit www.wandsworth.gov.uk/stan. For more information about the Cabwise scheme visit www.cabwise.com.
