According to Alan Bennett himself, the actual lady in the van “is a bigoted, blinkered, cantankerous, devious, unforgiving, self-centred, rank, rude, car-mad cow” … which makes us wonder why she is such a compelling subject for this wonderfully comic and entertaining play.
Perhaps the answer is that issues of appearance and personal hygiene aside; she displays characteristics we all secretly admire; a determined independence and defiance of authority; and a delight in non-conformity and in being capricious.
Written 1n 1999 about a 15 year period in his own life in Camden, North London; the play combines Alan Bennett’s famous dry Yorkshire wit with a gentle but pertinent social comment on the rights of the individual and responsibilities of society.
But don’t be fooled into thinking this is just a dull, highbrow social commentary; this play will make you howl with laughter and cry (possibly). What is a certainty is that, just like Miss Shepherd, the play will defiantly leave its mark on everyone who encounters it.
