Three teenagers have been sentenced in connection with the murder of Mahad Mohammed in Battersea last year.

Jermaine Sawyers, 19, of no fixed address was convicted for the murder of Mahad Mohammed. He has been sentenced to life imprisonment to serve a minimum of twenty years.

Cori Lindsey, 18, also of no fixed address has been sentenced to life imprisonment to serve a minimum of fourteen and half years.

Omar Harrison, 19, of Kenmore Road, Harrow, was convicted of manslaughter. He was sentenced to
nine years imprisonment. All three stood trial at the Old Bailey. Just before 01:30hrs on Wednesday 22 July 2010, 20 year old Mahad Mohammed was attacked and fatally stabbed by a group of young men on the Winstanley Estate in Wye Street, SW11. Despite efforts by members of the public
and the emergency services, Mahad died from his injuries a short time later.

A post mortem examination the following day found he had suffered four stab wounds to his back, hip, chest and neck. Local residents of the estate were woken by the sounds of shouting and Mahad's cries for help. Some witnessed the group attacking Mr Mohammed and saw him running away, bleeding heavily and then collapsing.

During the trial the court heard hours before his death Mahad had been to a bar in Streatham with his brother.

At the end of their evening Mahad drove them home where on route he stopped at a convenience store so his brother could purchase cigarettes. It seems that the defendants were outside the store and Mahad was approached by Sawyers. The two men discussed some sort of meeting later that evening and were in telephone contact.

Mahad dropped his brother and friend to their homes and drove his Audi to the Winstanley Estate where a short time later he was fatally stabbed. A murder investigation was launched by detectives from the Met's Homicide and Serious Crime Command who quickly identified the suspects from various CCTV footage that they seized from the area.

Searches of various addresses linked to the defendants led officers to recover numerous items of clothing that matched clothing worn by the suspects as captured on CCTV on the night of the murder. Blood stained clothing worn by Sawyers and Harrison was also found to match that of Mahad Mohammed.

Detective Inspector Dave Reid, Homicide and Serious Crime Command, said: "Mahad Mohammed was viciously assaulted and murdered by a group of men that included Sawyers, Harrison and Lindsey. Whatever the reason for his meeting with Sawyers that evening, Mahad was outnumbered and brutally attacked without any opportunity to defend himself or get away. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the witnesses who came forward and assisted the police with this investigation and the members of the public who attempted to help Mahad by administering first aid."
