So it must be summer...
Tooting Bec Lido, Europe’s second largest open air freshwater swimming pool, has now opened its doors for the summer season.
Labelled “a south London treasure” by the Daily Telegraph the Lido is one of only a handful of surviving open air swimming pools in London. It measures a huge 91.5 metres in length and boasts a separate pool for toddlers, a cafe and extensive space for sunbathing and picnics.
In recent years it has been named by Time Out magazine as the best in place in the capital for 'uninterrupted swimming' and the 'Best Outdoor Swim in London' in The London Pools Campaign's Golden Goggles Award.
The Council’s environment spokesman Cllr Jonathan Cook says, “It’s great that Wandsworth residents have such an amazing gem on their doorsteps.”
As well as offering a great outdoor swimming experience, the Lido has recently been improved with the construction of a £900,000 pavilion offering space for workout and exercise classes plus new toilets, changing facilities and a first aid room.
This investment came from funds provided by the Council, the South London Swimming Club (SLSC) and Sport England.
The pavilion also houses a multi-purpose exercise room used by the SLSC to enhance and increase participation in their annual programme of swimming and triathlon competitions, and it can also be hired for other recreational activities. A new courtyard provides additional space for sunbathers.
Over the past decade more than £1.5m has been spent by the council on improving the facilities and ensuring the pool's long term future.
The main pool at the Lido opens from 6am until 7.45pm. These daily opening hours will remain in place until August 31.
