Junior Doctor Rosena Allin-Khan won yesterday's (June 16th) by-election in Tooting by a majority of over 6,000 votes.

However there were no celebrations following the news of the death of Labour MP Jo Cox, who was killed in her West Yorkshire constituency on Thursday. Doctor Allin-Khan paid tribute to Mrs Cox after a two-minute silence.

There was a 42 per cent turn out of voters for the seat which was held by Labour's Sadiq Khan until he became London Mayor in May.

Dr Allin-Khan, who is Tooting born and raised and who works in A&E at St George's Hosipital, increased Labour's majority to win with more than 17,000 votes. Conservative Dan Watkins polled more than 11,500, while twelve other candidates polled less than 1,000 votes each.

Dr Allin-Khan's victory means that Wandsworth is now represented solely by female MPs. She will work alongside local Conservative MPs Justine Greening (Putney, Roehampton and Southfields) and Battersea's Jane Ellison.
