At the Pump House Gallery from January 19th
The Pump House Gallery, in Battersea Park, is to host an exhibition celebrating the work of artists and activists based in Japan.
It will be the first time work from a select group of pioneering artists, who have been on the art scene since the mid 1990s, will have been shown in the UK.
Art, Performance & Activism in Contemporary Japan will explore the boundaries of where art, performance and activism intersect.
The exhibition boasts work by Teiji Furuhashi, DumbType, Bubu de la Madeleine, Cho Yukio/Akira the Hustler, Yoshiko Shimada, Soni Kum and Chikako Yamashiro.
During its run there will also be specially-arranged talks featuring some of the artists involved, where they will discuss the themes they explore such as art and action, private and public and memory and identity.
The exhibition will be jointly curated by Professor Fran Lloyd, of Kingston University, and Professor Rebecca Jennison, from Japan 's Kyoto Seika University .
The organisers claim the works on show will represent "differing strategies of intervention that seek to engage in contemporary debates and to change how we think and act".
Their project is supported by POLA Foundation, Japan Foundation, Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation, Saison Foundation, and Kingston University.
