Grimy Earlsfield Railway Bridges Get A Facelift
Including a good clean, repainting and pigeon-proofing
Earlsfield Station's two railway bridges have been given a much-needed sprucing up. They have been cleaned and repainted in heritage-style railway green and – at the council’s request – the name of the station has been stencilled on both bridges to recreate their original Victorian-era appearance.
And now that the re-painting is complete, new pigeon proof netting is being installed underneath both structures to protect pedestrians underneath.
The work has been carried out by Network Rail at the culmination of a long-standing campaign to smarten the bridges, which are a prominent landmark feature in this part of the borough.
To help get the project off the ground the council provided £100,000 towards the overall cost of the scheme.
Wandsworth’s transport spokesman Cllr Jonathan Cook said, “These bridges certainly look a lot better than they did before and that is a real boost for the street-scene in this central part of Earlsfield.
“This was something we had long wanted to see which is why we contributed a significant sum towards the refurbishment costs. I think this investment will give the area a real boost.”
“And now that the painting has finished, we look forward to the pigeon proofing being upgraded so that pedestrians and cyclists don’t have to run the gauntlet of being hit by something unpleasant from up above as they travel underneath.”
