Infections Soar as Wandsworth Slow To Take Up Vaccine

Covid cases around SW18 postcode area double in last week

Vaccination drive targeting younger generations

People living around Wandsworth are being urged to take up the offer of Covid-19 vaccination after figures showed take up in the area was behind other parts of the capital in getting the jab

The latest data from the Office of National Statistics show that 65.5% of the adult population living in and around the SW18 postcode area has been vaccinated by 6 July compared to a London average of 77.6%.

For second doses the average is 38.1% compared to 52.0% for the whole of London.

Only 60.2% have had at least one dose in the West Hill North area and 61.3% in Wandsworth South compared to 72.3% of those residing near Wandsworth Common.

Local health experts believe there will be a close correlation between the spread of the Delta variant of the disease and the level of vaccination so further efforts are being made to encourage more people to get their jab particularly younger generations.

For the whole of London 52.2% of 18-24 year olds have received their first dose with just 15.0% having had their second. This rises to 65.9% and 20.1% respectively for the 25-29 age group.

Infection rates have continue to rise in the Wandsworth area more than doubling in the week to 1 July with Southfields and the Wandsworth Park vicinity having the highest rates.

Overall Wandsworth Borough has an infection rate of 284 per 100,000 population which the third highest in London currently. The worst affected local authority area in London is Hammersmith & Fulham which has an infection rate of 302 followed by Lambeth.
