Councillor Lister Writes to Wandsworth Town
Town Centre redevelopment, Post Office Closures & More
The continuing refurbishment of Southside is beginning to make a big difference in the town centre. Work is now well under way on the redevelopment of the Garratt Lane frontage while fashion retailer Gap is gearing up to move into its new store August.
Many eyes will also be on the planning application for the Young's brewery site. In shopping terms the plan is to complement the big national retailers in Southside with smaller independent stores and restaurants. The scheme is currently out for consultation and is expected to be considered by councillors in July. The decision to shut all eight of the threatened local post offices can only mean even longer queues at the town centre branch. The council has written to Gordon Brown asking him to set aside some of the money the Government is saving in network subsidies to pump prime new local initiatives

We're already looking urgently with St Mary's, Putney at the possibility of running a limited counter service at the church for customers affected by the local closures. This could include facilities for posting parcels and items for recorded delivery.
With Wandsworth's reputation for low council tax I was delighted to be asked to join the new Mayor's war on waste at City Hall. If I can bring a touch of Wandsworth-style value for money then we might at lasts begin to see an end to the year-on-year tax hikes that were the hallmark of the previous administration.
Finally, look out for the Wandle Valley festival in King George's Park on Sunday, June 8. There's a host of events including an archaeological 'dig' for children and a chance to take a close look at some of the creatures that live in the river.
