At the London Youth Games
Youngsters from Wandsworth are aiming for sporting glory in 2012 having made a flying start to the new Balfour Beatty London Youth Games season.
They joined hundreds of young competitors representing their home boroughs for a huge cross country event at Parliament Hill Fields on Saturday.
The Wandsworth team competed in races across six age groups - winning the under-13 females event and finishing second overall in the final team standings table.
The borough had two individual medallists in the under-13 girls race, through Breagha Campbell of James Allen's Girls' School and Saskia Millard of Alleyns who took silver and bronze respectively.
Breagha said: "It was a really good race. The final straight was really tough and I just wanted to hang in there. I'm happy with second, the course is very quick and I almost tripped a few times.
"I love running for Wandsworth and the team management is very good. I usually run for the Herne Hill Harriers and have swam at London Youth Games events before."
Wandsworth team manager Ann-Marie Ormonde said: "I'm elated. We came third last year; we had some great athletes in individual positions so I am very proud of them.
"We have London Youth Games cricket trials and mini marathon trials soon. There is so much going on in Wandsworth around youth sport and we want that gold this year."
Congratulating the team on their promising start to the season, Wandsworth Council's cabinet member for education and children's services, Councillor Kathy Tracey, said: "The borough was second to Richmond in the overall standings in the 2011 London Youth Games.
"This year's team looks ready to make another big challenge in Olympic year and I hope these talented youngsters can go one better and clinch the top spot.
"I wish them the best of luck. Who knows - maybe some will go on to become Olympic champions one day."
The event was the first of 80 school and community competitions supported by Sport England National Lottery funding that will take place across the year, climaxing at the London Youth Games finals weekend at the National Sports Centre Crystal Palace on June 28.
Competitors on Saturday were watched by Team GB Olympic marathon contender Scott Overall - a former London Youth Games competitor in his early years along with World 10,000m champion Mo Farah.
Now part of the Government's nationwide School Games programme, the London Youth Games has expanded to feature more schools events within its competition programme, to build on the record-breaking 71,000 youngsters who took part in last year's Games.
The London Youth Games is Europe 's largest annual youth sports event.
