End of October deadline for September 2013 entry
Parents are being reminded that they have until the end of the month to apply for secondary school places starting next September.
The deadline for applications for next year's intake of pupils to the borough's 11 state-run secondary schools is Wednesday, October 31. This crucial date applies to children who were born between September 1, 2001 and August 31, 2002.
The easiest way to apply is online at www.wandsworth.gov.uk/admissions.
As well as submitting their applications online, visitors to this part of the council's website can also access a wide range of information about local secondary schools and how the admissions process works.
Much is contained in a specially produced brochure called 'Choose a Wandsworth Secondary School', which contains all the key information families need when making their decisions. Copies can be downloaded at www.wandsworth.gov.uk/admissions.
Copies of the brochure can also be obtained by emailing admissions@wandsworth.gov.uk or by phoning (020) 8871 7316. Staff on that number can also help with other queries parents may have.
Executive member for education and children's services Cllr Kathy Tracey said: "Parents have many good secondary schools to choose from in Wandsworth. Our task now is to do all we can to help them make the right choice for their children.
"It is why we have produced a very helpful brochure that contains a wealth of information about local schools and offers a step-by-step guide to the applications process.
"In the time left before October 31 parents should try to visit individual schools and speak to staff so that they can form their own opinion of the school's suitability for their son or daughter.
"It is also very important that they read the admissions criteria for the schools they are interested in, to get an idea of whether their child is likely to be offered a place.
"Parents can apply for up to six schools in any part of London, but they are being strongly advised to include at least one that is close to home."
The borough's 11 state run secondaries include two new academies, the ARK Putney Academy and the Bolingbroke Academy in Battersea.
Other local secondaries include Burntwood School for Girls and Southfields Academy, which have both recently benefited from multi-million pound investment programmes, plus the new catholic secondary St John Bosco College which is due to move to brand new buildings in Battersea in 2014.
Parents can also choose Saint Cecilia's, Battersea Park School, Chestnut Grove Academy, Graveney Academy, Ernest Bevin College and Ashcroft Academy which are all rated good or outstanding by Ofsted.
Parents who apply by the October 31 deadline will be told the outcome of their applications at the beginning of March next year.
