A public open space in Southfields has won the coveted Green Flag Award for the very first time.

Coronation Gardens is one of six parks in the borough to be given the designation by the Keep Britain Tidy Trust.

One of the factors looked at by the judges is the amount of community involvement and the area is supported by the Friends of Coronation Gardens.

Wandsworth’s parks and open spaces are managed on a day-to-day basis by the council’s not-for-profit leisure and culture contractor Enable.

Coronation Gardens commemorates the coronation of King Edward VII which took place in August 1902.

The award certifies that it is looked after and maintained to a high standard. It is an internationally recognised quality mark for parks and green spaces and is awarded to open spaces that boast high environmental standards, are beautifully maintained and offer excellent visitor facilities.

This means that prestigious Green Flags can now fly over Battersea Park, Wandsworth Common, Tooting Common, Wandsworth Park and King George’s Park as well as Coronation Gardens.

The borough’s cabinet member for environment Cllr Judi Gasser said, “Wandsworth boasts some of the capital’s most popular and attractive green open spaces. They offer local people really beautiful and tranquil places to not only relax, unwind and meet friends but also to enjoy a huge range of sports, fitness and leisure activities.

“I’m delighted that six of our parks and commons have been honoured with these prestigious awards and so pleased that the dedication and hard work of everyone involved in looking after them has been recognised by the judges.”

Announcing the winners, Green Flag Award Scheme Manager Paul Todd MBE said, “I would like to congratulate everyone involved in these parks and commons in achieving a Green Flag Award.

“They are vital green spaces for the community in Wandsworth, bringing people together and providing opportunities to lead healthy lifestyles. The staff and volunteers do so much to ensure they maintain the high standards of the Green Flag Award and everyone involved should feel extremely proud of their achievement.”

Keep Britain Tidy sets the standard for the management of parks and beaches, aims to inspire people to be litter-free, to waste less and live more sustainably. To find out more about its campaigns and programmes visit www.keepbritaintidy.org.
