Bills will rise more due to Mayoral precept and Commons' levy
February 17, 2025
Wandsworth Council has announced that there will be a 2% rise in its portion of Council Tax bills from this April. This will mean that the borough continues to be the lowest Council Tax area in the country.
All of the rise is for the adult social car precept which means that it has to be spent on care for vulnerable, mainly older residents.
It is the third year in a row that the council has not increased the proportion of the tax bill over which it has discretion how to spend.
Residents will still see an additional rise in their bills due to an increase in the proportion levied by the Mayor which he says is mainly being invested in expanded police resources.
A Wandsworth Band D bill outside the levy area from April onwards will be £990 compared to £961 for the current financial year. Over half of this rise is attributable to the increase in the Mayoral precept.
Residents in the Wimbledon and Putney Commons Levy area will also have to pay extra with Band D householders now paying £1,030.
Leader of Wandsworth Council, Simon Hogg, says, “We are freezing your Council Tax for the third year in a row. That means you will continue to pay the lowest Council Tax in the country.
“Sound financial management is at the heart of everything we do. Wandsworth has one of the lowest levels of debt and some of the highest financial reserves in London, allowing us to freeze the main element of Council Tax and invest in what matters most to you – cleaner streets, safer neighbourhoods and a stronger community.
“Together, we’re making Wandsworth an even better place to live.”
