Parenting Help Proves a Success

Wandsworth residents say they have benefited from council-run scheme

More than 70 locals have successfully completed a council-run parenting programme designed to improve their family life and help their children succeed.

A special celebration will take place this Monday (September 6th) at the Civic Suite, Wandsworth High Street, where the graduating parents will be presented with their completion certificates.

The Strengthening Families, Strengthening Communities programme helps mums, dads and carers develop stronger relationships with their children and pass on valuable life skills. It targets families who have experienced difficulties within the home or could benefit from extra support.

The course is free of charge and involves 13 weekly sessions which take place in children’s centres, schools and other venues across the borough.

Executive member for children’s services Cllr Kathy Tracey says, “This programme offers valuable skills like how to cope with difficult situations in the home and how to establish parental authority. It is helping mums and dads to break cycles of negative behaviour and encourage their children to develop the self-discipline and self-confidence they need to succeed.”

Feedback from parents who have completed the programme includes:

“I have a much happier home.”

“My children have a better and stronger mum.”

“We have learned about our children's individual needs.”

The programme is available to mums, dads and carers living in Wandsworth with children aged between three and 18 years old.  For more information email Juliet Bellagambi at jbellagambi@wandsworth.gov.uk  or call 020 8871 6732
