following assurances from Network Rail to the Town Hall Transport Group
The council inform us that they have been pressing the company to carry out much-needed improvements at the station which is one of the most heavily-used in the borough.
Network Rail's representative told the council's passenger transport liaison group that it expected to complete works during 2010.
The council's transport spokesman Guy Senior said:
"We've got to keep the pressure on Network Rail to deliver these improvements. It's encouraging that the company is now ready to come before our group and hear first hand the frustrations of our members. We also need Network Rail to give us firm dates for platform lengthening works at stations in Wandsworth. This is the key to providing extra capacity on rush hour trains."
Network Rail also confirmed that planned works at Wandsworth Town, including a new station entrance and ticket office, should start next year.
The council will be securing a £1m commitment in the legal agreement with the developer of the town centre's Ram Brewery site. This money would fund additional improvements at Wandsworth Town beyond those planned by Network Rail.
