Win-win for genealogy?
Genealogy as a hobby has advanced in leaps and bounds since the transcription of public documents such as birth, marriage and death indexes, parish records and census returns by commercial enterprises such as Ancestry, Findmypast and several others. However, there are still more records held by local councils, such as Wandsworth, which, I understand, are freely available for public inspection if members of the public physically visit the enquiry offices but which are otherwise unavailable. For example it is impracticable for many ex-residents to travel from Australia, just to check when their family moved house from one local council home to another back in the 1950s.I believe this is a service that local councils could provide at a small charge; it’s a win-win scenario – more income for the local authority and more information sources for genealogy aficionados. Come on Wandsworth! How about it?
