Places of Interest
Following Rachael Spencer’s recent post about The London Hydraulic Power Company building at Wapping (thanks for the heads-up Rachael!) I’m starting a thread on places of interest. Please add places that you have found and enjoyed and would like to share with others. My emphasis will be on places which are less well known than the established museums and landmarks, that are free for admission and are reasonably accessible from this locality. So, my starters (in no particular order): Free Friday lunchtime music at Ignite at Café Consort, Royal Albert Hall http://www.royalalberthall.com/tickets/ignite-summer/series.aspx Excellent jazz/swing/blues &c.. Royal Doulton building, corner of Lambeth High St / Black Prince St Wonderful tilework on exterior. Kensal Green Cemetery Extensive, brooding, seemingly detached from urban London. Surrey Docks Farm http://surreydocksfarm.org.uk/index.php?option=com_frontpage&Itemid=1 St Pancras Station Victorian Gothic at its best, plus the hugely affectionate Betjeman statue. The area of renewal behind St Pancras & Kings Cross Stations. Any and many of the places opened for “Open House Weekend” http://www.openhouse.org.uk/public/london/event.html The Great River Race http://www.greatriverrace.co.uk/ A great spectacle, and this year to be be run from Greenwich to Ham. Bonnington Square, SW8 A delight, just yards from Vauxhall Station. The Thames Festival http://www.thamesfestival.org/weekend/highlights/ QuecumBar, Battersea http://www.quecumbar.co.uk/ Free jam session on Tuesdays. Non-stop gypsy jazz by an ever-increasing ensemble.Over to you!
