Fleur Anderson, MP for Putney is to host a family bike ride as part of the Wimbledon and Putney Commons 150th Anniversary celebrations on 22 May.

The event is part of the Wimbledon and Putney Commons 150th Anniversary celebrations. The ride will be open to all abilities and will be around 6km in total, from the river to the Anniversary Sports Day on Wimbledon Common.

People can sign up online.

Participants will be meeting outside Chelsea and Fulham Sea Cadets on Putney Embankment, SW15 1LS, at 11am on Sunday 22 May. Those arriving early will be able to get free checks and basic repairs on their bikes.

The ride is organised with Wandsworth Cycling campaign at the invitation of Wimbledon and Putney Commons Conservators. It will be on off-road cycle paths and quiet roads. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

At the end, participants can join the escorted ride back to Putney or stay on the Common to enjoy more of the day's activities.

As part of the celebrations, sports will be played on the Richardson Evans playing fields, and there will be plenty of activities for all the family near the Windmill. These will include an AFC Wimbledon football penalty shootout for children, a dog agility display, a horse display, rugby, lacrosse, golf putting, a stoolball match, cycling, and many other activities.

Fleur Anderson said, "I am so excited to be taking part in the belated Wimbledon and Putney Commons 150th Anniversary celebrations!

"Cycling is a passion of mine, even more so since I gave up my car. It is such a brilliant way to enjoy southwest London. This bike ride is open to all ages and abilities, and it will be a lot of fun!

"There will be certificates at the end for everyone involved, and I'll be awarding a prize for best-dressed bike. Then you'll be free to join the rest of the fantastic celebrations on the park of join the ride back to Putney.

"Please sign up or just come along on the day. It would be great to see lots of you there!"

The event was supposed to take place last year but was cancelled due to the pandemic. The delayed celebratory Games Day will now be taking place on the Commons on 22 May from 9am until 5pm. The Conservators will be bringing together representatives from many of the sports that have taken place on the Commons over the years including running, golf, football, rugby, dog agility display, horse display, stoolball and tug of war.

Diane Neil Mills, Chair of the Wimbledon and Putney Commons Conservators, said, ""The Commons were created for the purposes of 'recreation and exercise' and there could therefore not be a more fitting way to celebrate this very special occasion. We hope the day will be a splendid event for all the family to watch participate and bring a picnic too!"
