With over 543 restaurants the half million target looks achieveable
Having now reached the halfway point for the 2010 campaign, homeless charity StreetSmart is well on track to meeting its £500,000 target.
The 543 restaurants involved this year have already raised over £215,000 for the charity in November alone. A further £22,000 was raised by its new sister campaign SleepSmart. A new iPhone app, created to enable diners to book tables at participating restaurants and downloaded over 700 times since its launch last week, has also boosted figures at this year’s halfway mark.
Throughout November and December, diners visiting participating restaurants across the UK are asked to add just £1 to their bill as part of StreetSmart’s campaign to help the UK’s homeless. In a similar way, SleepSmart asks guests in participating hotels to add a voluntary £1 donation to their final bill.
Glenn Pougnet, Director of StreetSmart, commented:
“It is so encouraging to see such a warm response to this years campaign, despite the economic downturn. With more restaurants involved this year than ever before and more diners supporting the StreetSmart campaign, we are thrilled to report such positive news at this halfway point.”
StreetSmart operates as an umbrella charity providing funding to 95 homelessness charities across 18 cities. The chosen charities receive between £500 and £15,000, depending on the project to be funded. Once the winter emergency needs have been met, StreetSmart use any remaining funds to help projects that support people in finding jobs and achieving sustainable independent living.
Unlike other charities in the same bracket, StreetSmart ensures the money raised by restaurants is reinvested in the local area. Diners can therefore be assured that the money they donate will benefit their local charities, helping to shelter and feed the homeless during the cold winter months. Every penny raised by StreetSmart goes directly towards helping the homeless, all administration costs are covered by StreetSmart’s generous sponsor, Deutsche Bank.
